About Me

Hello, I'm Kumari Selja

I am Kumari Selja, belonging to a lineage with a profound political heritage.

My father, Chaudhary Dalbir Singh, instilled within me a sense of duty and service to my country from a young age. Witnessing his dedication to the people of Haryana ignited a passion within me to create positive change.

Academic Journey

My academic journey began at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in New Delhi, where I discovered a love of learning. Later, at Panjab University, I delved into the complexities of history and philosophy, earning my Master's and M.Phil. degrees. These formative years not only broadened my intellectual horizons but also fostered empathy and a hunger for social justice.

Embracing Leadership

In 1990, a pivotal moment came when I became President of the Mahila Congress. It marked the beginning of my political career, and I quickly found myself immersed in the needs and aspirations of India's women. Their voices fueled my determination to uplift the marginalized and fight for their rightful place in society.

Electoral Breakthrough

My first electoral victory came in 1991 when I was elected to the 10th Lok Sabha representing Sirsa in Haryana. As a young parliamentarian, I was eager to prove myself, advocating for education, women's empowerment, and the rights of the rural communities. My commitment earned me consecutive victories in the following elections, demonstrating the trust that my constituents placed in me.

Throughout my tenure, I’ve had the honor of holding ministerial positions, starting with my appointment as the Union Minister of State for Education and Culture. Later, I served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and subsequently, as the Minister of Tourism. The pinnacle of my political career came when I was appointed as the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment – a role that resonated deeply with my core values.

My journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. Politics, particularly in India, is a male-dominated field, and I’ve consistently had to challenge societal norms. However, every challenge has hardened my resolve. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that persistence and a genuine belief in the causes you champion are potent instruments for change.

Beyond politics, my interest lies in environmental protection. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and I firmly believe that each of us has a responsibility to leave behind a better planet for future generations.

At the heart of it all, my motivation comes from the people I serve. When I see a young girl with access to education, a family secured in a decent home, or an individual empowered to stand up for their rights – it makes every struggle worthwhile. The journey continues, and with it, my unwavering determination to be a voice for the voiceless and a beacon of hope for a more just India.
